  30. NINE FIRMS NAMED NASA EXCELLENCE AWARD FINALISTS
  31.  
  32.      Nine finalists have been chosen for the NASA Excellence 
  33. Award for Quality and Productivity for 1990.  The finalists are:
  34.

  36.  
  37. * Bendix Field Engineering Corp., Seabrook, Md.
  38.  
  39. * Boeing Computer Support Services, Program Support
  40.   Communications, Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Ala.
  41.  
  42. * EG&G Florida, Inc., Kennedy Space Center, Fla.
  43.  
  44. * Grumman Technical Services Division, Titusville, Fla.
  45.  
  46. * Honeywell Inc., Space Systems Operations, Clearwater, Fla.
  47.  
  48. * Marotta Scientific Controls, Inc., Montville, N.J.
  49.  
  50. * Rockwell International Corp., Space Transportation Systems
  51.   Div., Downey, Calif.
  52.

  56.      Two of the finalists, Barrios and Marotta, will be evaluated 
  57. in the new small business category established last year by NASA 
  58. Administrator Richard H. Truly.
  59.  
  60.      This small business category, while following the basic 
  61. evaluation criteria for larger organizations, permits evaluators 
  62. to offset the competitive advantage of larger companies with more 
  63. abundant resources, personnel and funds at their disposal.
  64.  
  65.      George A. Rodney, NASA Associate Administrator for the 
  66. Office of Safety and Mission Quality, announced the finalists 
  67. after a 6-month application and review process.  Finalists are 
  68. picked after a review by the Excellence Award Evaluation 
  69. Committee.
  70.  
  71.      "The award applications are more numerous and getting better 
  72. each year, making the job of the Evaluation Committee very 
  73. difficult.  A large number of good companies competed this year," 
  74. said Joyce Jarrett, chairperson of the NASA Excellence Award 
  75. Evaluation Committee.
  76.  
  77.      The award process now advances to the third phase in which 
  78. validation teams visit finalists' facilities to verify 
  79. performance achievements and process attainments.
  80.  
  81.      Following the review and recommendations of the award 
  82. evaluation teams, NASA's Total Quality Management (TQM) Steering 
  83. Committee, composed of Center Directors and Headquarters 
  84. Associate Administrators, will make the final selection of award 
  85. recipients.  The NASA Administrator will announce award 
  86. recipients at the seventh annual NASA/contractor conference on 
  87. Oct. 24, 1990.

  89.      Key goals of the award are to internalize quality and 
  90. productivity practices and TQM processes throughout NASA and the 
  91. agency's contractors and to transfer performance improvement 
  92. methods of the award recipients to others.
  93.  
  94.      The award is administered for NASA by the American Society 
  95. for Quality Control, Milwaukee, Wisc., a professional association 
  96. and a worldwide leader in development, promotion and application 
  97. of quality and quality-related technologies.  The award 
  98. recognizes NASA prime contractors, subcontractors and suppliers 
  99. for outstanding achievement in quality and productivity 
  100. improvement and TQM.
  101.  
  102.      The recipient of the 1989 Excellence Award was Lockheed 
  103. Engineering and Sciences Co. (LESCO), Houston, one of NASA's 
  104. Johnson Space Center's primary contractors.  Since the Excellence 
  105. Awards introduction in 1985, LESCO was the first support 
  106. services/mission processing contractor to win this honor.

  108.      Previous recipients of the award have been Rocketdyne 
  109. Division, Rockwell International Corp., Canoga Park, Calif.;  
  110. Martin Marietta Manned Space Systems Co., New Orleans; and IBM's 
  111. Systms Integration Division, Houston.
